I would like to tell you a little bit about myself and my journey as a parent. I am the mother to three adult children and grandma to three beautiful grandchildren.
I was a relatively young mom when my first son was born and I certainly did not have all of the answers when it came to raising him. Fifteen short months later, his brother arrived. Now I had two children under the age of 2! I still didn’t know exactly what to do. I knew I loved them and wanted the best for them. A few years later my daughter was born. I was still figuring out parenting with help from other family members and friends. We did not have access to the internet like we do now, so any help came from books or people around me.
As my oldest son reached school age I felt the pull to homeschool. I had heard about homeschooling several years earlier and did not fully understand it, but knew I was supposed to embark on the journey. Through a great deal of trial and error, I homeschooled all three of my children through graduation. All three are now successful, independent adults.
I mention all of this to share that I was not a perfect parent, I do not believe such exists. I learned from others and through doing the best that I could. I was not aware of parent coaching until I completed my education in Child and Family Development and Family Life Education.
I was very excited when I learned that such a career existed. I always knew I wanted to work with young children and/or their families, I was just not sure in what capacity. Upon learning about coaching, I knew I had found what I was looking for. I could combine my knowledge of child development with the opportunity to encourage families. A win-win situation!
I bring a different aspect to coaching as I am also a Certified Family Life Educator. I will explain more about that in a future post 🙂
